The First Summer Olympics Summary
When the Olympics started, it was a two day event in the middle of June. The Olympics used to be called "I Olympia". "I Olympia" was actually made to bring countries closer. Surprisingly, the 1896 Olympics was the largest meeting of international competitors! The second Olympics was the first to allow women to compete in sports. Sadly, the two world wars discontinued three of the Olympics(1916, 1940, and 1944). Unfortunately, the Berlin Olympics were actually hijacked by the Nazi government in 1936 and in the 1972 Olympics 11 Israelis were killed by Palestinian terrorists. Then suddenly celebrating 100 years of the Olympics, a pipe bomb exploded and killed 2 people and injured many more. The bomber was at large until 2003 when he commited 4 bombings!Lights will Guide you Home Video Response
I watched a video called "Lights will Guide you Home" with music called "Fix You" by Coldplay. It was about the Olympic torch history and how it was transported in the past. Some cool ways I saw the torch being transported were: the torch travelled by foot, riding in a train, being skied and one that really amazed me, is a person swimming underwater with it! Some ways that I saw the torch being started were: torch to torch, torch to candle to torch, and one that caught my eye was with a flare gun. This story told me that good things can happen, in exchange for good deeds.
I put the beaver because we love our beavers.
I drew the Olympic rings because I love the colours.
I desided to put the the Olympic torch because I saw It come in.
I put a gold medal becase I want to win one in the Olympics some day!
Olympic Symbol
I chose to draw this image because:
The rings- They are the Olympic rings
Inukshuk- There are some in Vancouver and they repersent the Inuit people
Mountains- The Mountains surround Vancouver
Title- Colours of the rings (but up and down)
Inukshuks neck strap- every Olympic medal
Olympic Stories-The Perfect 10
Nadia Elena Comaneci was born on November 12, 1961 in Onesti, Romania. When she was 6 years old, she started gymnastics. When she grew at the age of nine, she participated in her first national competition. In the European championship, Nadia won the best all around category. At the American cup competition, she got two perfect tens on the vault, and floor, then got 19 perfect scores. In the 1976 olympics, she had a perfect ten on the bars which hasn't been ever done, then got six more perfect tens. In the same year, she competed in the Olympics in Montreal, and won 3 golds, 1 silver, and 1 bronze, then became the youngest person in history to receive the honor of becoming a hero of socialist labor which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon anybody in the Soviet Union. In 1980, she was beaten by Yelena Davydova, and admitted she was better. Later on she inspired and trained gymnasts from her home. Never again did she accomplish what she did in the 1980 Olympic games.
Olympic Response
Story: The standard high jump "scissor kick" just didn't work for Dick Fosbury. So, he invented his own way to get over the bar: headfirst. Everyone thought this looked ridiculous so they called it the "Fosbury Flop." But Dick had the last laugh-he left the 1968 Olympics with the gold! Nowadays, most high jumpers flop just like Mr. Fosbury!
Response: I think that not having the original "scissor kick" in high jump is quite odd and inventing your own jump is pretty impressive. The name does sound quite ridiculous, the "Fosbury Flop". I'm not really surprised he got the last laugh, he got gold in the 1968 Olympics! I can't believe that Mr. Fosbury's flop actually got most high jumpers today to use the "Fosbury Flop". I'm surprised that his invention was headfirst.

I chose the mountains because they are a symbol of Canada that represents the Rocky Mountains. The torch that goes all across Canada, and brings Canada together as one. I also said on my symbol, believe to tell Canada that we sould all believe in our athletes and cheer them on to win gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic games.
Interesting facts about the Olympic rings
Have you ever heard of a guy named Pierre de Coubertin? Well did you know he is the founder of the Olympic rings? He was in Greece once and he found this symbol and he thought this would be the perfect symbol for the Olympics . He chose the colors blue black red yellow and green because thouse are the 5 colors of the 5 continants flags who participate in the Olympics.
Olympic Facts
Story:In 1896, at a mere ten years old, Dimitrios Loundreas of Greece won Olympic medals in the gymnastic competition. (from Discovering Links book)
Response:I think it's amazing that a 10 years old boy won some Olympic medals at a very young age. Only a very talented boy would do something like that. He must have been working very hard to get some medals.♥
Interesting facts
In 1896, a 10 year old kid named Dimitrois Loundreas won a gold medal against gymnasts who were 15 years older than him. Isn't that amazing that a 10 year old kid could win a gold medal in the Olympics. Imagine how famous that kid must have been, all that glory man, I wish I was him.
*Facts About The Olympic Rings*

They chose blue, black, red, yellow, and green. They were chosen because at least one of these colours is in every continents flag

*Lights Will Guide You Home*
I watched a video called Lights Will Guide You and it showed alot of different torch runs, how the torch was carried and, how the torch at the Olympics was lit. The backround music was ''Lights Will Guide You Home'' by Coldplay. I think it was great how it showed all the ways the torch was carried. Here are some examples skiing, snowboarding and I liked it when the person was carrying the torch underwater and was swimming with it. It's also been transported by train, boat and, airplane. I liked how it showed the torch being lit at the Olympics. My favorite was when they lit it with a flare gun. I bet all the athletes have a great time.
"Lights Will Guide You Home" video response
The video Lights Will Guide You Home" is amazing!!!!!!! I think it is really cool how ever time the Olympics come around they go to the bottom of Mount Olympias to get the Olympic flame. Also think that it is really cool how they show the Olympic clips from a long time ago.

Lights Will Guide You Response!
This video really inspired me alot! It also reminded everyone about the people in the past carrying the torch with different designs, and lighting the torch in different ways. Some people were crying because some of them won, and some of them lost. I would have cried too, if I lost, but there's always next time. I hope someday I'll run with the torch.

"Lights Will Guide You Home"
This is the most amazing Olympic video I've ever seen. It's very inspirational. It proves that by carrying the flame the world comes together, cheering, laughing, crying and most of all believing in one another. It makes you want to be a part of the Olympics, and cheer with everyone else that has been touched by the Olympic torch. It's amazing that one single flame can cross the world. Traveling by train, walking, running, dog sledding, underwater and many other ways that you would not belive were even possible. I encourage everyone to take the time and watch this amazing inspirational video.

The Rings
The Rings
The Olympic rings were choosen by Pierre de Coubertin. When he was in Greece he saw five interlocking rings. He thought it would be perfect for the Olympics. One ring for every continent. The continents are Eurasia, North America, South America, Africa and Australia. The colors of the rings were blue, black, red, yellow, and green. These colors were choosen because every nation has at least one of these colors on their flag.
Olympic History
"One wrestling champion, Milo of Kroton, supposedly ate 9kg of bread and drank 10L of wine a day to train for his gruelling matches. You wont believe it, but legend has it that two ancient greek athletes once ate two whole oxen in one sitting, one each."

I think that is amazing, 9kg of bread and 10L of wine. I dont think that is even possible, how can your body even deal with all that bread and wine. He must have been really hungry and thirsty. The two men eating the two oxen in one sitting, that could not happen those things weigh like 150lb each that would be super hard and impossible to eat in one serving.

2010 Olympic Symbol
I chose this symbol because I wanted to show lots of spirit for the Olympics, and cheer the athletes on. I used the red mitten to show that their travels will be safe, and warm along the way. The rings represent the Olympic games (also represents the five continents). The beavers represent the Canadian symbol, and cheer "good luck" to the athletes. The inukshuk guide them along the way.

The video was really awesome, this inspired me to maybe be in the Olympics when I'm older. I thought it was really cool when one of the torch carriers swam under water with the torch. I was inspired when I saw that because I love to swim.
Their expressions on their faces showed they were happy and excited to be carrying the Olympic Torch. Even some kids were lucky enough to carry the Olympic Torch. This must have been a great experience for the people carrying the flame and the the people who are running with them. Also for the people watching. I like the ending of the video when they show all the mountains and the sun set just going down, that was so beautiful!

I drew six of the sports played in the Olympics. these sports are skating, tennis, curling, football, hockey and skiing. I drew the five Olympic rings. These colors were chosen because every flag has at least one of those colors. I also drew a Canadian flag to represent where the Olympics are going to be in 2010.

The way the Olympic flame was transported was, under water, running, walking, climbing, train and sled. There was cheer, joy and happiness floating in the air. The torch has been lit so many wonderfull ways. I felt happy for the kids that have mental and physical problems, that get to hold or run with the torch. I hope that every athlete that is in the Olympics had a great time.

My Olympic logo
I chose to put the beaver on my poster because I wanted to represent Canada. I put red Canada mittens on because I think that they give everybody lot's of Olympic spirit. I also put three medals on because that's one of the reasons why the athletes go to the Olympics.
my olympic idea
I chose this design because I like the torch so I put it on then I made a fading olympic symbol then i put the inukshuk in because I think it shows everyone being together and thanking mother nature for the wonderful land we own and the wonderful weather and I put the candels for the kids who used to hold the candels as if it was like a tortch to show some of the olympic spiret. I am sorry I am not the best drawer I will try harder to make a better pictsher.
Personal Response
In the Atlanta, 1996 Olympics, there was one person in charge of feeding all the athletes and staff. His name was Lew Sprague. He served 60 000 meals a day, for 33 days! Altogether that is over 1 000 000 meals! I cannot imagine how he felt each day, trying to always have enough dishes and stuff like that for everyone. It's amazing that he could do this. Anyone who could do this is talented, because that is a lot of food. Imagine trying to think up food to put on your menu, and trying to have enough of everything so everyone could have what they want. It would be overwhelming! Lew, is the one who deserves a gold medal!Olympic Logo
I chose this symbol because I think it represents the Olympics really well. I put on inukshuks because the Olympics are in Vancouver this year and inukshuks are a part of the Aboriginal culture in that area. I also put alot of Olympic rings because they are the symbol of all the Olympics. It represents the Olympics spirit bacuse all of the inukshuks are smiling and cheering each other on, and most of all their all having fun!

My Olympic Logo!!!

I chose the beaver because the Olympics are being held in Canada, and Canada is known for their beavers. We even have a beaver on our nickel. I put mountains in the background because B.C has lots of mountains. I put an inukshuk on one of the mountains to represent B.C's native people. I choose the saying "Swifter. Faster. Stronger." because that is an Olympic motto. Of course you have to write where the Olympics are being held, I wrote that fairly large, to complete my logo.
My Olympic Symbol

I chose to draw this image because:
The rings- they're the Olympic rings!
The colors in 'Vancouver'- it's the order of the colors on the rings.
The setting- outside because some of the sports are outside.
The log- the beaver carved 'Vancouver' in the log to show his spirit!
The beaver- there's beavers in Vancouver, and they are a Canadian symbol.
The beaver's collar- again, to show his spirit!
Olympic Symbols
I chose this design because I liked the idea of the rings so I arranged them in a circle. There is a giant orange and red ring around it because the rings inside were in a circle. I chose orange and red because of the torch flames. I chose an inukshuk and mountains because the Olympics are in BC and I chose medals and a podium because of the Olympics.

Olympic Logo
I chose these things because I thought they were important things in the Olympics.
I put the maple leaf in the middle because this year's Olympics will be in Canada. I also included the mittens because almost everyone had them and they are a 2010 Olympic souvenir. The torch and the medal were commonly in the Olympics so I thought of including them.
Lights Will Guide You Home
I liked this video alot because I love to watch when the last person lights the Olympic cauldren. I like to see all the different ways the flame gets to the cauldren and who runs with it and how they light it. I think its amazing when I see kids running with it because I start to wonder what they could have done to get to run. I think it's cool how people with disabilities (like the boy in the wheel chair) can still get to run with the torch.
Adults, kids, and even people with disibilities have skiied, swam, ran, and walked to get the torch to the Olympic cauldren. They have lit the cauldren by throwing the flame into the cauldren, pouring the flame into the cauldren, lighting a ring around them, and so many other unique ways.
Light's will guide you home
I was watching a video called "Light's will guide you home." All the torchbearers were full of joy running with a group of people. When the torch comes by everyone is full of emotion. The Olympics shows what everyone has been through and how hard they have worked. The Olympics mean alot to all sorts of people. I think its neat that in different places the have to run up stairs or have the torch thrown on to the Cauldren. The torch is always first lit in Olympia Greece (Mount Olympia) where it first started! My Vancouver 2010 Olympic Logo

Lights Will Guide You Home
This video is very inspiring. It really inspires people to go for their dreams and never give up no matter who they are or what they want to do. It's very cool to see all the different torches and people who carried them. Those people seemed really overjoyed and excited to be able to carry the torch. All the people following, cheering, and encoraging you would make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. It would be something that you would never forget.
Some of the ways the Olympic torch has been lit have been, under water, catapulted up into the couldron, passed candle, to candle to the couldron, ran, skied, dogsled, a boy in a wheel chair, by train, and probably many other ways that I just don't know. I thought it was really cool when the torch was catapulted up into the couldron, that was truly amazing.

OLYMPIC VIDEO:Lights Will Guide You Respones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)
This video tells me about the history of the Olympic torch. Some of the ways it travelsare, by bikes, running, swimming, scuba diving, plane, rowboat, skiing, snowshoe, dogsled and snowmobile are just some of the ways it travels. The video also showed me that over the years each Olympics has had different styles of torches to carry the flame to it's destinations. I also saw 2 different ways they lit the Olympic Cauldron. The first is the regular way, stick the torch in the Cauldron to light it. The second is catupulting it into the Olympic Cauldron which I find really cool. That's the only ways I know about but I'm sure that there is 1 more way. But what really amazed me was how many torch bearers there were and are for each Olympics. And also Canada has gone crazy about the Olympics of 2010. And so this is my response on the video Lights Will Guide You. Go to www.vancouver2010.com to see the video.
Lights will guide you video response
This video had sad music and it shows many differnt torches from ancient Greece all the way to Vancouver twenty ten Olympics. It showed some of the people who carried the torch. To me this video is very emotional because it does not matter what your religion is or if you are handicapped you are part of the Olympics as well as every one else. This video showed a couple of ways how the flame was transported. It was transported by >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
train
car
under water scuba diving
running
skiing
biking
airplane
sailing

Video Response Lights will Guide you!
Hockey, snow boarding, skiing, running, and the torch being lit all showed up on the screen. I watched amazing victories made by Olympic athletes and I saw their faces.![]()
I think this video was amazing . If I were to rate this video I would give it a 10 out of 10. I love how it shows all the different ways they light the flame. This video makes me into the Olympics in a whole new way!!
Olympic video: The Light Will Guide You Home
The video showed alot of emotion. Sadness, happiness, joy ect. The rough ground they ran on and the tears that they shead running the torch. The video was very emotional.
The emotion was the one thing that cought my eye. What they did was very heroic for their country, and that person in the wheelchair that was running the torch almost brought a tear to my eye.
The video was amazing. It must have been hard but a great feeling for the torch runners. Imagine having the torch in your hand. It was your responsibility to get the torch to the next runner, but the pride you would have running the torch would be the best feeling in the world.
One day I hope I will be here in Canada again, when the Olympics come back so I can share the pride again with my friends and family.
Lights will guide you video response!
In the video it showed lots of different people running with the torch. It showed so many ways they traveled by, one person even scuba dived with it!
The video also showed lots of different Olympic outfits from over the years, which the torch bearers got to wear. Some of the outfits were really unique, and very colourful.
In some parts of the video it showed different sports. It showed people winning and losing, to me that showed how emotional it would be to be in the Olympics.
I thought the music was perfect for the video. At first it sounded like a sad song, but then it sounded happy at the same time somehow.
On the video i saw the big crowds of people in the stadium and i wished that i could go watch the Olympics. The only time i watch them is on tv and that's not the same as being in the real stadium.
Lights Will Guide You Video Response
The video was really great. It shows many things that had happen in the past. The torch relays was in the video. It shows the first torch relay through the past years from now.
Some people were crying because they won and some because they lost. I know it's hard for them when they don't win because they practiced almost everyday. Winning in a competition or a game is hard but you just have to believe in yourself and make yourself feel comfortable. Every person has their own strengths and weakness so you must try hard and not give up.
It must be very emotional when you're running the torch. It's a great honour to be that person. I hope someday I'm going to be that person.
Olympic facts
Story: Dawn Fraser was nervous about swimming in the Olympics. When she got to the pool and took off her warm-up suit she realised she had forgotten to put her swim suit on.
My response: When we started reading this story I did not expect that to happen, I thought she left the race with a gold medal. This story was historical. I wonder if she won the race after all?

Personal Response
In 1896, a ten year old Dimitrios Loundreas competed in the Olympics for gymnastics. He actually ended up winning some medals also!
I'm surprised that he was ten years old and he was allowed to be in the Olympics! That's different now because you have to be fourteen, but for some sports you have to be older. That must have been lot's of work for him, with all the training he would have to do. I wonder if he had any time for school. I think that's amazing that he won some medals and he was only ten! I don't know if any of his medals were gold though.
The Olympic Rings
Did you know? The modern Olympics founder Pierre de Coubertin was on a trip in Greece and saw a symbol of five interlocking rings and thought it would be the perfect symbol for the Olympics. The five rings resemble the five continenets and one of the five colors black, blue, red, green and yellow are somewhere on each of the continents flags.

Dale Begg-Smith - The Olympic Hero of Australia
Dale Begg-Smith was born and raised in Vancouver, little did he know that he would grow up and become a hero. When he was young he always skiied with his family, this helped his ability to ski. When he got older Dale and his brother, Jason skiied for Canada, but Canada did not allow time for their school so they quit the team. Both of them moved to Australia to pursue their skiing dreams. This was a good move because their parents background allowed them to be dual citizens. Dale attended training programs to get better at skiing so he could join the Australian team. Finally after a few years they let Dale join the Australian team. In a freestyle competition, Dale won a bronze medal, he won many other awards also. In 2006 Dale was in the Torino Olympics. He had a error-free performance, which helped him win gold! He won the first gold in freestyle skiing for Australia. Dale followed his dreams and brought fame to Australia, too.Elisabeta Lipa-Oleniuc
Elisabeta Lipa-Oleniuc has been in six Olympic games and she's gotten at least one medal every time! She is the first rower ever to do that in Olympic history. She was born in Siret ( Rome) in 1964, in October. She was discovered when she was fourteen years old, when a recruiter came to her school and thought she had lot's of talent. A couple weeks later she was training at a Olympic Rowing Center, which would've been an amazing experience. Before she was twenty years old she had already won three world championship medals! (one of them was a gold!) So she has won quite a few medals including the ones from the Olympics. Only four people have won medals in six different Olympics, Elisabeta is one of them. She is titled 'The most medaled rower in Olympic history'.
An Olympic Story Response
"In one ancient Olympic horse race a mare named Breeze flew to the finish line while leaving her rider at the starting gate and claimed first-place prize!" - from the book Discovering Links page 57.Response : I read this mini story and thought, "Wow! This is amazing! A horse winning first-place prize!? How is this possible!?" I guess it could be true. You never know what really happened in Greece. I would be so shocked if my horse won and not me. Think of how much fame that horse had! Back then they would be popular! Getting gifts and food for a life time! Having every one know who you are! What a life that horse must have had with all that stuff!

This morning me, my dad, my brother , and my brother's friend's family came with us to go watch the olympics torch run down portage ( around were the grace hospitial ,and the super store is that street ).
Ryan's friends family picked us up early that morning and took us to the scotia bank on portage to meet my dad, when my dad arived we stuffed into my brother's friends car. All of a sudden the streets started to line with police cars , we jumped out of the car as fast as we could cause we we re worried that the torch was coming and that we re going to miss it. But it was only the police trying to clear the way. An RBC van came by handing out flags to everybody , then the coca cola truck came by with people dancing on it and handing out speacial coca cola ( it was a speacial olympic one) ryan and his friend got one. Next a bus with all the previous torch runners in it.
Next thing you know you see all these police cars and quads and there is the olympic torch runner. She went by us screaming "Go Canada" and " Come run with me " so i ran along with her all the way to the RBC. I think i may have made a couple people mad cause i ran i front of them. When she got to the RBC she ran up on to the stage that was set up and lit the other girl's torch then she went on the road and was letting kids come take pictures with her. There was this very kind lady behind me that told me to go up and take a picture with her so i gave my camera to my brother's friend's mom and ran up but the security guys that were running around her told me to go back but the lady with the torch told me to come , but in the end the security won.
This experince is deffinetly something i will never forget.
