Name: Calgary
Gender: girl
Personality: Calgary's favorite sport is snowboarding. Her dream is to go to the 2014 winter Olympics! She can't wait to start training and go to Sochi for the next Olympics!
Reason I chose Calgary: I chose to make Calgary my mascot because polar bears love the cold and snow, so she's a perfect mascot for the winter Olympics! Also, polar bears seem like energetic animals, and the Olympics are not only about bringing home a medal, but also about having fun!
Memorable Moment
On February 12th Nodar Kumaritashvili, of the Gerogian team, was fatally injured at the last corner of the track at the Whistler Sliding Center. After a practice run, he came out of curve 15 and did not make a proper entrance into curve 16. This caused him to have a late entrance into curve 16, and although Nodar tried to fix the problem he lost control of the sled, causing a tragic acident. Nodar slid too high on the track, went over the wall, and hit an unpadded steel pole near the finish line. 911 was on the phone immediatley and doctors and paramedics rushed to the scene. Unfortunatlely, the doctors and paramedics could not save him in time.
Olympic Facts
'In 1896, at a mere ten years old, Dimitros Loundreas of Greece won Olympic medals in the gymnastic competitions.'
my response: I think it's pretty cool that he was only ten years old and won medals. That must have been really hard and he must have trained alot! I wonder what he got (gold, silver, bronze) ...?

My Olympic Symbol

I chose to draw this image because:
The rings- they're the Olympic rings!
The colors in 'Vancouver'- it's the order of the colors on the rings.
The setting- outside because some of the sports are outside.
The log- the beaver carved 'Vancouver' in the log to show his spirit!
The beaver- there's beavers in Vancouver, and they are a Canadian symbol.
The beaver's collar- again, to show his spirit!
Lights Will Guide You Home
I liked this video alot because I love to watch when the last person lights the Olympic cauldren. I like to see all the different ways the flame gets to the cauldren and who runs with it and how they light it. I think its amazing when I see kids running with it because I start to wonder what they could have done to get to run. I think it's cool how people with disabilities (like the boy in the wheel chair) can still get to run with the torch.
Adults, kids, and even people with disibilities have skiied, swam, ran, and walked to get the torch to the Olympic cauldren. They have lit the cauldren by throwing the flame into the cauldren, pouring the flame into the cauldren, lighting a ring around them, and so many other unique ways.
Teofilo Stevenson
Teofilo Stevenson was the first boxer to win a gold medal three times in the same weight division. He was offered lots of money to turn professional, but refused and remained an amature for his whole career. The first time he went to the Olympics was in 1972 at age 20. He used his height and long reach to his advantage and beat George Foreman as Olympic heavy weight champion. On his way to his second gold medal, in 1976, he beat his first three opponents in a combined time of just 7 minutes and 22 seconds. In 1980 Hungarian Istvan Levai was the first boxer to beat Stevenson before losing on points. Stevenson won 4-1 and won his historical third medal. In 1984 Stevenson didn't get to defend his title because Cuba was part of the Soviet boycott. Nobody knows if he would have kept winning, but he was definatly one of the best fighters professional or amature!Olympic Q&A's
